| As of April 15, 2000, there are three different written examination elements. As of February 23, 2007, the FCC no longer requires a Morse code exam for any level of amateur license.
The Technician and General Class exams contain 35 questions, the Extra Class: 50 questions. A different written examination is required for the Element 2 (Technician), Element 3 (General), and Element 4 (Extra Class) licenses. (See 97.503(b).
Each of these examinations consists of a specific number of questions that must be selected from each of nine (or ten) topics known as sub elements. These sub elements are designated with a numeral "1" through "0" (see Table 5-1).
