| How does a foreign radio amateur with a U.S. (FCC-issued) Amateur Radio license renew their license or obtain a Vanity call sign when they do not have a Social Security Number (SSN)?
Non U.S. citizens may hold FCC-issued Amateur Radio operator licenses and call signs -- including Vanity call signs. Since foreign U.S.-licensed radioamateurs do not have SSNs, foreign nationals with FCC Amateur Radio licenses should enter the word "Foreign" in the Vanity call sign application form blank that asks for the Social Security Number (SSN).
A non-citizen radioamateur can also renew or modify their FCC license online at our website by inserting the word "foreign" in place of the SSN. To renew your amateur license, visit the Amateur License Renewals.
A foreign radioamateur wishing to obtain a Vanity call sign must additionally request a password from ULS Technical Support which is used to access their FCC license record. If you wish, we can obtain your password for you. If you want us to obtain your password, key in the word "Unknown" in place of the password on the online Vanity Call Sign Application
form.
